Fish Oil - A Good Source of Vitamin D
Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin, like Vitamin A. This means that you dont need it everyday as your body will store any unused quantities for use as and when it requires. It is one of the only vits that the body naturally produces via exposure to an adequate amount of sunlight. Around 1 hour of direct sunlight per week is required however suprisingly many people are not out in the sun long enough to reap the benefits. Research shows that as we get older our bodies produce less vitamin D so adults are advised to monitor and regulate their diets to ensure they are getting enough.
- Maintains your calcium balance which is vital for the nervous system to function properly as well as aiding bone growth and bone density,
- Helps cell differentiation, which results in cell specialization for certain body functions. Basically this helps growth, heal wounds, boost immunity and aids against types of cancer,
- Plays a role in Insulin secretion when the body requires an increased amount of insulin,
- Regulates blood pressure,
- Helps fight against autoimmune diseases such as Multiple Sclerosis, Diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease and Hypertension,
- It can slow the affects of arthiritis and lessen back and joint pains,
- Having a vitamin D deficiency contributes to osteoporosis.
It is very rare to overdose on vitamin D so dont be afraid to take supplements and such.
Vitamin D can be found in;
cheese, butter, egg yolk, the liver of some sea fishes. Fish liver oils are the richest source of Vitamin D.
