Oranges - A Good Source of Vitamin C
Vitamin C, aka ascorbic acid, is a water soluble vitamin like Vitamin B. It is responsible for many metabolic functions in the body, around 300 to be precise, which include the growth and repairing of tissue, helping to heal wounds quicker and making you less susceptable to infections and diseases. This also promotes healthy gums and gland function. Vitamin C also;
- Helps with the metabolism of carbohydrates,
- Plays a part in calcium and phosphate disposition in the bones making them strong and healthy,
- Plays a role in the maturation of red blood cells and can help fight against blood clotting, clot retraction and anemia,
- Fights against allergies and asthma, increasing your immune system and fighting against infection,
- Increases the good cholesterol in your body (HDL) and can lower your blood pressure.
There is a recommended daily intake of Vit C which is around 100mgm. Most of the unused vitamin C is lost through urination, the body does not store it. Smoking and alcohol reduce the levels of vit C so it is advised that heavy smokers and drinkers up their amounts.
Vitamin C can be found in;
Amla fruit, Oranges, Lemons, Limes, Pineapple, Tomato, Cabbage, Lettuce, Spinach, Beans, Cauliflower, Peppers, Guavas, Papaya, peas, strawberries, kiwi fruit, brussel sprouts, sweet potatoes.
