Eat a Balanced Diet
Eat a balanced healthy diet! Isn’t this what we have heard innumerable times ever since we were little children? Then it was our parents, grandparents, uncles, aunts, and teachers telling us. Now it is the dietician at the gym, the counselor at the weight loss program, and the Doctor at the hospital, all saying the same thing.
Some of them even tell you that had you eaten a well balanced diet when you were younger, you would not have developed these lifestyle diseases. It is, however, never too late to begin, and now is a good time to start.
What Is A Balanced Healthy Diet?
A balanced healthy diet is a diet in which a variety of foods from all major food groups is present, and a sufficient quantity of each type is eaten. For a diet to be balanced and healthy it is not enough that all food groups are present. Eating too much of one type will make the diet unbalanced.
Let us understand these food groups. The first food group contains carbohydrates, or starch. This is found in potatoes, cereals, rice, wheat, and their products, such as pasta and noodles. This food group constitutes a significant part of what we eat, and a diet is healthier if the high fiber variety of carbohydrates is eaten.
The second major food group contains proteins. This is available in all animal products, such as meat, fish, and eggs, as well as in pulses (edible seed from pods, i.e. peas or beans). Again, eating the low fat variety of proteins makes the diet healthier.
The next food group contains vitamins. These are found in abundance in fruits and vegetables, and are essential in strengthening the immune system and helping the body fight infections.
Fats are not a bad word. It is essential to include the correct amount of fat in a balanced healthy diet.
Minerals are found in many foods, including dairy products, meat, fruits, and vegetables. They play a key role in the correct functioning of various organs of the body.
How To Eat Healthy
One must be clear about the objectives behind eating a balanced healthy diet. It is obvious that such a meal plan is superior to any other. However, if weight loss is the objective, then the diet has to be specifically designed to achieve that goal.
The first thing to keep in mind is “keep the portions small”. Often enough in the thrill of following a balanced healthy diet, you actually end up eating more calories than you would otherwise.
Leave the low fiber, high fat, saturated fat foods from your diet. While you might be eating the correct amount of fat, as per your diet chart, if this is only saturated fat, then you run the risk of developing high cholesterol problems.
Cut out excess salt from your diet. Salt is an absolutely essential ingredient of a balanced healthy diet, but eating excessive salt can cause high blood pressure problems.
It is not difficult to follow a balanced healthy diet; a little bit of tweaking around with what you normally eat, and cutting out the junk food, will transform you into a healthier, stronger, and fitter person.
