Avoid Alcohol if You Have Diabetes

It is easy to find foods that your diabetic diet will allow, they are everywhere. It is a little bit harder knowing where to draw the line if you are in question about why certain foods are not easy for a diabetic to handle. When a food has an immediate and spiking effect on the blood sugar levels it needs to be put on your diabetic food list to be avoided.

Processed foods, of course, top the list because they go through the digestive process so quickly. Everything made with white flour, sugar, fruit sugar, and chocolate need to be removed from your regular diet. Fried foods and anything with plenty of salt should be avoided. Also, preservatives are quite harmful to a diabetic and rank high on the diabetic food list to avoid. The way they interact with the body means that it is harder for the insulin that your body makes to absorb the glucose, meaning that if your pancreas is already struggling to make enough it is going to have to work even harder with these chemicals in the body. Commercially packaged foods of all kinds, including “health foods” will have these preservatives in them. Watch out especially for partially hydrogenated oils. These have a debilitating effect on the body’s ability to use insulin to your best advantage.

Diabetic Food List To Avoid or Eat Rarely:
Processed Foods: Candy, sugary soft drinks, any kind of white bread especially if you do not consume any protein or fats. Anything made from white flour, rye, corn, polished rice or any pastry, pasta, cakes, biscuits, and pies.
Starchy Vegetables: Especially potatoes but this includes beets, carrots, peas, and beans.
Concentrated Dairy Products: Cheese and cottage cheese, yogurt, whipping cream. These are products that have some water removed from them.
Fruits: Mangos, bananas, grapes, strawberries, and dates are particularly to be avoided. Fruit juices are much higher in carbohydrates than just the fruit
Alcohol: You can discuss this with your doctor but as a general rule smoking and alcohol are to be completely avoided.

There are certain suggestions for eating out as well so that you do not feel housebound by your condition. Some common sense ideas are to avoid anything labeled “jumbo”, “deluxe”, or anything else that smacks of giant-sized entrees. You will begin to know which restaurants you can count on for baked, roasted, and/or steamed whole foods with plenty of fiber instead of greasy dishes. Choose water instead of regular sodas or fruit juice. Add flavor to your salads with tasty vegetables instead of high-fat dressings and toppings; use peppers, tomatoes, onions, etc. Enjoy a pizza- as long as it is thin-crusted and topped with extra vegetables instead of extra cheese.

Working with a dietician and your doctor, you can make a healthy and successful diabetic diet plan. It will give you great ideas for the full variety of foods that you can eat. They will be able to help you decide what your goal weight is, how quickly you should try to achieve it, as well as deciding on the appropriate amount of calories daily.

It is possible to have a healthy, fun, and fulfilling lifestyle after being diagnosed with diabetes. It is just important to know what is and is not on the diabetic food list that will keep you in control of your situation.
